Hunger strike for justice and a life of dignity in Bhopal: the 2006 hunger strike is over, now the politicians must keep their promises
Unfortunately we have had to go hunger strike to ensure that our just demands are met. Twenty-one years is too long to suffer, too long to be ignored. The callousness and cruelty of the injustices perpetrated upon the Bhopali people are no longer bearable. Nor is the indifference of a Prime Minister who cannot find time to see people who have walked 800km to meet him. The padyatris are resolved not to return from Delhi until all their demands are met. We have now begun an indefinite hunger strike. This is a step that carries obvious dangers. Our people are very serious. They are saying that this time, it is all or nothing. If we cannot win our demands, then we may as well die. Give us justice, or take our dead bodies. This is how people are talking. We very much hope that the Prime Minister will relent, that perhaps he has been in consultation about our wishes, that we will not be totally ignored. In that case, the hunger strike can still be averted and bodies which are already racked by the effects of poison and exhausted after their epic journey on foot from Bhopal, will not have to endure the further torment of hunger. Registering to join the global relay hunger strike Once a hunger strike starts there will be no going back. We must all do what we can to support the Delhi hunger strikers.
We very much hope that none of us will have to go on hunger strike. Our demands are just, our need is desperate, our patience at an end.
