PRESS STATEMENT
Hundreds of Bhopali victims of American multinational Union Carbide today observed Hiroshima Day through a day long fast calling for withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.
The mass Satyagraha led by four organisations at the memorial to the Bhopal disaster was in solidarity with the hunger strike by American activists in which 25 long term fasters demanding “Troops home fast” have been joined by 4,350 people in 23 countries. Today is the 33rd day of the hunger strike started on July 4 in front of the White House in Washington DC.
Diane Wilson one of the activists on this historic hunger strike has earlier served 3 months of imprisonment in Texas for her protest action at a Union Carbide factory in support of the struggle of the Bhopal survivors. The four organisations leading the mass Satyagraha in Bhopal have been working with survivors of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal and those poisoned by contamination of ground water for nearly two decades.
The organisations also presented a poster exhibition at the site of the Satyagarha depicting Hiroshima, Bhopal, Iraq and other crimes against humanity perpetrated by the US government and corporations. Protestors condemned the US government’s support to the atrocities in Lebanon where over 900 civilians including 300 children under 12 years have been killed and more than 3,000 have been injured by the Israeli government.
According to the organisations : Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmachari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha, Bhopal ki Aawaaz and Bhopal Group for Information and Action, the invasion and continuing occupation of Iraq that have killed more than 40,000 Iraqis and over 2,000 American soldiers demonstrates the terror practised by the United States administration in the service of American corporations such as Haliburton, Bechtel and Lockheed-Martin.
