INTERVIEWS WITH PADYATRIS

The people who tell their stories here are aged between 22 and 90 years old. Some were affected by the 1984 gas leak, others were poisoned by chemicals leaking from Union Carbide's abandoned factory. Some are both gas- and water-affected. All respponded to a simple questionnaire.When they talk about income and what, if any, compensation they have received the figures are given in rupees. On 20th February 2006, the date they set off for Delhi, the rate of exchange was:
                        1 US dollar = 44.37 rupees
                        1 Euro = 52.84 rupees
                        1 UK pound = 77.42 rupees
A rupee was worth 2 US ¢, just under 2 European ¢ and just over one UK penny.
