Dear Friends,
The ICJB thanks you for your tremendous efforts in drawing so much
attention world wide to the 20 anniversary of the Bhopal disaster.
The on going work of these grassroots movements ensures that the
Bhopal disaster will never be forgotten. We enter 2005 with greater
force and we hope that justice is served.
To date we have recorded over 300 activities that took place. If
an event has gone unlisted we would like to know about it so we
can better face challenges that still lie ahead. If you did not

1. 176 Events in Asia: highlights of events

Events held in India alone****
More than 250 people held a demonstration in solidarity with the
survivors of the Bhopal
disaster demanding that Dow Chemical be prohibited to bid on a contract
for a new refinery
complex of the Indian Oil Corporation.
India:
Cuddalore:
Over 300 people participated in the events of the 20 anniversary
in Cuddalore, India, in a
city with many hazardous chemical facilities. An art competition
with a pollution theme was
held for school children in Grades 7-11 and was followed by a candle
light vigil.
Melakottaiyur:
In Melakottaiyur more than 300 villagers came together for a candlelight
vigil and local
groups organized a photo exhibit of Bhopal. Previously this year,
the citizens of
Melakottaiyur successfully opposed plans to build a hazardous waste
disposal facility.
Chennai:
In Chennai several programs leading to the 20 anniversary were planned
by Chennai
supporters of ICJB. Events included a screening of the Bhopal music
video, a viewing of the
Hunting For Warren Anderson video, and an exhibition of paintings
drawn by children from
Semmankuppam, Cuddalore. Co-sponsor groups included: Human Rights
Initiative Tamilnadu,
Consumer Action Group,
South India Fisher Folk Association, Tamilnaudu Meenavar Munnetra
Sangam (Tamilnadu Fisherfolk Development Association), Tamilnadu
Women's Collective,
Pasumai Thaayagam, Greenpeace India, Black Theatre and The Other
Media.
The week of the 20 anniversary a candlelight vigil was organized
at the Marina
Beach in
Tamilnadu. The next day 200 people gathered at the same location
to form a human chain
to protest corporate crimes. After a film screening, street play
and a discussion finished
off the evening.
China:
20 Individuals and representatives of NGOs, including legislative
official Hong Kong
legislator Leung Kwok-hung, marched to the offices of Dow Chemical
in Wan Chai on
December 3. A statement was read to Dow representatives that included
survivor
demands and linked the issue of Bhopal to the current situation
in Hong Kong. "In Hong Kong,
where we have struggling for democracy," the statement said,
"Bhopal stands as the most
tragic and extreme example of what can happen when powerful people
and corporations can
act with reckless impunity and without accountability, and when
ordinary people have no
control over their city and their lives."
2. 4 Events in Africa: highlights of events
South Africa:
In Richards Bay, South Africa groundWork and Vuka Enviro Dot Com
held a speak out
against industrial pollution at the Veldenvlei community Hall on
December 4. The speak out
not only highlighted the Bhopal disaster but also discussed the
industrial pollution that
people in South Africa face. South Africa is a chemical hotspot
for a large number of
chemical plants (Sasol, Caltex, Engen, Sapref and Foskor) that have
caused numerous
deaths and injuries of its workers in recent years
An op-ed piece submitted by groundWork highlighting what Bhopal
means for people of
South Africa was also circulated on December 3 to local papers.
3. 44 Events in Europe: highlights of events
In the UK over 10 different events were organized with tremendous
coverage from BBC.
Plays
were staged in London and the West Country, we hope to have details
soon on
www.bhopal.fm.
ICJB
members helped in the production of the major BBC TV documentary
screened at
9pm primetime slot to an audience of millions.
Liverpool University Rugby team collected for medical relief of
survivors in the city. The
city's Hindu Association and the local Diocese also resolved to
support the cause of the
Bhopal survivors. Friends of the Earth in the NE of England supported
the actions and
FoE in Scotland joined the ICJB (see next item).
Scotland:
On December 1, Scotland Friends of the Earth and Amnesty International
launched a "No
More Bhopals' " motion in Scottish Parliament led by Des McNully
(member of Scottish
Parliament). The following day the Corporate Responsibility(CORE)
Coalition launched an
initiative in Parliament to promote greater corporate responsibility
in Scotland. Members of
this initiative include: Centre for Human Ecology, Friends of the
Earth Scotland, Oxfam in
Scotland, and Save the Children. On December 2 a delegation delivered
a letter to the US Consulate in Edinburgh demanding justice for
the survivors of Bhopal and action to prevent future disasters.
On December 3 activists took to the streets of Edinburgh to ask
the public to sign campaign postcards.
France:
In France groups held a demonstration in Toulouse at the site of
a 2001 chemical plant
explosion that injured over 2,000 and killed 31 people. A rally
in Grenoble in a residential
area near the chemical facility was organized by Plus Jamais ca
and Greenpeace.
Spain:
On the 20th anniversary of the Bhopal industrial disaster, Greenpeace
International
activists displayed images from Bhopal in the Plaza Mayor in Mardrid.
They collected
signatures on a petition and demanded that the chemical company
Dow pay its debt to the
citizens of Bhopal.
Germany:
Greenpeace International activists constructed a memorial sculpture
of a mother with two
children near the Dow Chemical factory in Rheinmuenster. This sculpture
isa replica of the
"Bhopal Memorial" in India. Its banner reads: "Bhopal
dies - Dow keeps silence!"
4. 9 Events in Latin America: highlights of events
In Mexico, to Peru and Chile supporters remembered Bhopal. Pan International
(Pesticide
Action Network International) groupstook part on December 3 "No
Pesticides Day" in a
series of activities to highlight the health risks and the lives
lost, due to the use of
pesticides in agricultural communities.
Mexico:
Mexico, Foods Free of pesticides, The Network of Action on Pesticides
and Alternatives in
Mexico (RAPAM) organized a press conference on December 2 that was
broadcast live on
local radio station to announce "No Pesticides Day" and
to discuss the reason behind this
day. Indigenous communities in the Sierra Tarahumara and CONTEC
marched through an
agricultural fair dedicated to sustainable food, free of pesticides
and transgenics.
Peru:
Locals from Tauccamarca (Cusco) and Andahuaylas (Apurimac) held
a discussion of the
implications of the responsiblity of the State and the chemical
manufacturers at a national
level forum. Also discussed were cases of intoxications and deaths
caused by the use
pesticides nation wide. Congressional representatives also attended
and discussed these
cases.
Chile:
Throughout agricultural areas there were a series of cultural events.
Small local
agricultural producers created stands to show alternatives to the
use of pesticides
displayed by. Children from local areas also participated in art
festivities.
5. 84 Events in North America: highlights of events
ICJB supporters visited to board directors' offices and homes, and
delivered Jadoo brooms
and toxic waters in Washington DC and in Chicago. In other cities
there were over 40
screenings of Bhopal: The Search For Justice that included discussions
with film producers
or round table discussions on globalisation and corporate crime.
Missouri:
In St. Louis, The Gateway Green Alliance and Universal African Peoples
Organization, and
Jobs with Justice held a panel discussion as part of the Black and
Green monthly forum. A
local radio station highlighted the event and the Green Time cable
access channel ran the
17 minute documentary Twenty Years Without Justice as part of a
lead up event to the 20
anniversary.
The panel discussion included Nishant Jain, Association for India's
Development, Lee Blount,
Jr., MD, of Health & Environmental Justice, Jamal Rogers, a
long time activist for social
justice in St. Louis and co-chair of the Organization for Black
Struggle, and Zaki Baruti,
Green Party of St. Louis, Universal African People's Organization
(moderator).
Connections were made between with segregation of the society in
St. Louis and victims of
the Bhopal tragedy. Jamal stated that even though the names of toxics
and corporations
may change, the underlying dynamics of the issue remain the same.
Wisconsin:
In Milwaukee a candlelight vigil was held at the Ghandi statue in
India-America Friendship
Park. Two Bhopal survivors spoke at the vigil that was organized
by ICJB supporters,
Education for People! and the Association for India's Development.
Washington:
Tasveer Independent Asian Films in Seattle hosted a screening of
Bhopal: The Search For
Justice with the following co-sponsors: Northwest Asian American
Theater, Amnesty
International Corporate Action Network, Amnesty International Group
4 of Seattle, ASHA
for Education, Community Alliance for Global Justice, South Asia
Center, Community
Coalition for Environmental Justice, Wing Luke Museum, and University
of Washington,
Student Labor Action Project.
California:
20th Anniversary events started on December 2 in Santa Cruz, Berkeley,
Davis, San
Francisco and Palo Alto. Bay Area screenings were co-sponsored by
3rd I: South Asian
Film, Association for India's Development-Bay Area, Association
of South Asian Political
Activists (UC Berkeley), Department Cultural and Social Anthropology,
California Institute
for Integral Studies, Ecology Center, EKTA, Friends of South Asia,
GAIA, Organizing Youth,
PANNA and Third World Majority.
The San Francisco screening of Bhopal: The Search for Justice was
hosted at the Roxie
Cinema which followed an in-depth Q&A that ranged from issues
about the Bhopal case to
US conditions of Chemical plants today.
These events do not include the numerous activities organized by
students at
college campuses national wide.
6.We (ICJB in US) recorded over 200 Print Articles Covered World
Wide: Global (Asia, Europe, other regions) and North America Much
much more was written, particularly in the UK, Europe and India

Organizational Participation
Dozens of local and regional groups participated world wide on December
3, 2004. We thank all of you for your
amazing work.
Greenpeace
International offices in 15 countries and 7 cities in India participated
on December 3 activities.
PAN International in at least 13 countries planned activities on
December 3 as part of The Day of No Pesticides in honor of Bhopal.
Friends of the Earth International member groups in Europe and in
Africa showed their support and connected toxic issues in their
regions to Bhopal.
Amnesty International released a new report Clouds of Injustice:
20 years on calling for people around the world to pressure Dow
and Indian Government and offering recommendations to the United
Nations.
Jobs
with Justice national chapters in Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Washington
State, Portland, and Atlanta will be hosting a tour in November
- December of leaders of the New Trade Union Initiative and incorporating
worker safety issues in a global context and highlighting Bhopal.
In
addition to these there have been numerous efforts leading up to
the 20 anniversary from several national and international groups.
