16th Anniversary health care report: the ongoing medical disaster 2.12.2000
1984-2000 - A comparison of the three main health care givers to the gas

Survivors' Demands
Survivors of the toxic cocktail of gases that has killed over 20,000 people
to date and left 120,000 in need of desperate medical attention have,
over the last 16 years fought for, and continue to fight for their rights.
As the disaster has grown in magnitude and severity so their demands have
necessarily become more urgent. The principal author of the world's worst
industrial disaster, Union Carbide Corporation, and the Governments of
India and Madhya Pradesh must act upon these demands immediately if the
largely forgotten gas-affected people in Bhopal and their children are
to know any respite within their lifetimes.

The Burson-Marsteller Hall of Shame
Burson-Marsteller, the world's largest PR firm, has a rogue's gallery
of despotic clients. The firm worked with the Nigerian government to obscure
evidence of genocide in Biafra. The company also set up smoke screens
for the Argentinian government to continue "disappearing" people,
and worked with South Korea's military government in order to prepare
the world for the 1988 Olympics, which occurred just a year after the
"People's Power" movement finally ousted the dictators. And
while some dictators are called red, their money is still green. B-M also
represented Nicolae Ceaucescu, Romania's mini-Stalin, until the Christmas
revolution broke the back of that regime. Apparently, Ceaucescu forgot
that impoverished citizens of command economy regimes tend to not to own
televisions (thus, the people missed many of his photo ops). However,
the Romanians filmed Ceaucescu's genocide trial, and staged his death
for the global media's cameras.

Corporate accountability - The South's day in court
ON MARCH 28, 1990, the Texas Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision
that shocked the business community and bucked the trend across the United
States of restricting foreigners from suing U.S. corporations for injuries
caused overseas. In a 5-4 decision, the Court gave notice to U.S. companies
that if they hawk their hazardous wares overseas, they may find themselves
hauled into U.S. courts, at least in Texas anyway.

Dow Chemical (Dow), the second-largest US-based chemical corporation with
over $20 billion in revenues, will celebrate its 100th anniversary this
year. The chemical giant's history is blemished with the production, marketing,
or cover-up of information related to dangerous products such as Agent
Orange and the pesticides DBCP and Dursban. Today Dow faces thousands
of lawsuits related to silicone breast implants. The corporation is also
under fire as the world's largest producer of chlorine (a byproduct of
which is dioxin), and as a major source of chemicals that contribute to
global climate change and other health and environmental problems.

Shakeel was born in February 1985. While in his mother's womb he was heavily
exposed to the toxic gas cloud that leaked from Union Carbide's pesticide

methyl isocyanate, hydrogen cyanide and other unknown gases have killed
more than 20,000 people and maimed more than half a million people to
date. Shakeel is one of the many exposed children who are suffering physical
and mental growth and development problems as a result of the gas. The
following text is a verbatim (translated) interview with Shakeel and his
family from November 2000. It appeared in The Guardian (UK) on Saturday
