CHANNEL 4 TV NEWS, JON SNOW'S REPORT ON BIRTH DEFECTS IN BHOPAL, 1 August 2002

"Shortly after the incident, the Wall Street Journal's Barry Neuman wrote that Indians don't expect compensation for lives lost in the Bhopal poisonous gas leak because "the certainty of reincarnation satisfies the Hindus; for the Muslims, what God wills, God wills."
ABC NEWS 4 September 2002
"The state of the Union Carbide plant is a disgrace. When the company finally left the city in 1999, it left behind around 5,000 tonnes of process and waste chemicals - toxins that have leached into the soil and water in and around the factory."

28 August - Central Chronicle, Bhopal "Safety failure led to Bhopal gas tragedy" A former employee of Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL) asserted that all safety measures like the vent gas scrubber (VGS), chiller plant and the flare tower to neutralise the toxic gases were not working on the fateful night of December 2/3, 1984, when the toxic gases gushed out from one of the underground tanks of Bhopal based plant of Union Carbide India Ltd. Deposing before Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bhopal, Rameshwar Kothe, the then production assistant at the MIC plant, Gauri Shankar also admitted that MIC was stored in the underground tanks beyond the capacity and the nitrogen pressure in the tanks was not increasing. Similarly, he said that a day before the incident, the lines were also found to be choked and were also washed to allow flow of nitrogen into the tanks. It may be recalled that more than 40 tonnes of gases gushed out from one of the underground tanks of UCIL, rained death and destruction over Bhopal. More than 20,000 people died due to after-effects of the gas. The UCIL was facing trial in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bhopal, for the disaster. (Bang goes Carbide's "sabotage" lie. This testimony was not widely reported around the world as the the bigger news from the court eclipsed it.)

28 August - Central Chronicle, Bhopal "No dilution of charges against Anderson: Court" The decision of the court came as a big blow to the CBI and the Government of India, which had so far not initiated extradition proceedings against Warren Anderson despite pressure from various groups working for the relief and rehabilitation of the Bhopal gas leak disaster victims.
