INSTITUTE, W.Va - Senior Union Carbide officials said the leak of toxic gas on Sunday may indicate a need for changes in piping and valve systems at chemical plants throughout the country. Their conclusion was supported by officials of chemical industry associations, interviewed separately. The capacity of pipes and valves is critical in chemical emergencies, experts told the New York Times. Undersized pipes can pose an increased risk of escape of chemicals into the atmosphere. |
