Baby Moses recovering

LOMA LINDA, Calif. - An infant known only as Baby Moses, recipient of a rare baby-to-baby heart transplant at the age of 4 days, has "progressed well." Dr. Leonard Bailey said the infant "was taken off the respirator on Friday and went on bottle feedings Sunday. He seems to be a happy baby and his parents have enjoyed holding him."

Libel ruled in commentary

CHICAGO - TV anchorman Walter Jacobson libeled the makers of Viceroy cigarettes with a commentary that said the company lured youths to smoke with an ad campaign equating the habit with adult pleasures. A federal jury ruled against the WBBM-TV commentator and CBS. The network and Jacobson, known for his nightly "Perspective "commentaries, were sued for $10.1 million.

5,000 flee toxic fumes

CLARKSDALE, Miss. - A fire at the Red Panther Chemical Co. pesticide plant ignited explosions and blew a cloud of toxic fumes through Clarksdale, injuring 12 people and sending 5,000 residents fleeing into the streets before the blaze was doused.

$5 million for gas victims

DANBURY, Conn. - Union Carbide Corp., a chemical and consumer giant blamed for a catastrophic gas leak that killed hundreds of people in Bhopal , India, will pay $5 million in interim relief to disaster victims. A plan to disperse the funds to victims of history's worst chemical disaster was approved by U.S. District Judge John F. Keenan in Manhattan.

Comet nearer to Earth

PASADENA, Calif. - Halley's comet passed within 58 million miles of Earth, its closest approach to the planet during its current inbound voyage toward the sun. The comet was about 57,566,500 miles from Earth, said Ravenel Wimberly, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory computer scientist who helped calculate the orbit of the comet.
