Stocks mixed, Dow off

NEW YORK - The stock market finished mixed Friday in light trading following Wednesday's record-setting advance.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 3 .56 to 1,472.13. It established a new high at 1,475.69 Wednesday. For the week, the Dow jumped 7.80 points.

Broader market indicators eased. The New York Stock Exchange index lost 0.13 to 116.55, down from the all-time high it set Wednesday. Standard & Poor's 500-stock index also backed down from its record, easing 0.37 to 202.17. The price of an average share fell 4 cents.

Advances outnumbered declines 830-660 among the 1,946 issues traded.

Big Board volume dwindled to 84,060,000 shares compared with 143,650,000 Wednesday.

On the trading floor, Texaco was the most active NYSE-listed issue, rising 1 to 32 1/2. The stock has fallen about $7 a share since a Texas jury said that for luring Getty Oil away from a merger with Pennzoil, it should pay $10.53 billion to Pennzoil.

Baxter Travenol followed, adding 1/4 to 15.

Among blue chips, Chevron dropped 1 to 65 5/8, Westinghouse Electric dropped 1/4 to 45 1/2, American Express eased to 70 1/8.

Chrysler eased 1/2 to 42 5/8. It announced a new round of sales incentives for auto buyers.

Union Carbide added 1 5/8 to 63 5/8. Indian officials have asked Carbide chairman Warren Anderson to testify in front of a judicial commission investigating the Bhopal gas leak that killed 2,000 people.

In high technology issues, IBM fell 1/2 to 139 3 /4, Digital Equipment dropped 1 1/4 to 120 7/8. Among semiconductor stocks, Texas Instruments edged down to 27 7/8.

Among the airlines, Eastern Airlines rose 3 /8 to 6 3 /8. AMR Corp., the parent of American Airlines, climbed 1 1/2 to 42 3 /8, UAL Inc. jumped 1 3 /4 to 49. Delta added 1 1/4 to 37 3 /4.

Campbell Soup climbed 2 5/8 to 76 1/2 on talk that some family holders of the stock may be ready to sell.

Prices were higher in moderately active trading on the American Stock Exchange.

B.A.T. Industries led the Amex actives, edging up 1/16 to 4 1/8. Dome Petroleum followed, unchanged at 2 7/16. Key Pharmaceuticals was third, adding 7/8 to 11.

The American Stock Exchange index rose 0.90 to 242.26. The price of an average share gained 5 cents. Advances topped declines 274-237 among the 771 issues traded. Composite volume totaled 7,217,250 compared with 10,911,150 traded Wednesday.

The National Association of Securities Dealers' index of OTC stocks rose 0.94 to 313.95.
