Support the survivors' struggle for justice and dignity There is plenty everyone can do to help the survivors. 1. Make a donation The Bhopal survivors – victims of both Carbide's gases and of the water poisoning caused by chemicals abandoned in the factory – are among the poorest people on the planet. The corporation that ruined their lives is now, thanks to its merger with Dow Chemical, the largest, richest chemical company on earth. The struggle is an uneven one. The survivors time and again have to put their illness-wracked bodies on the line because they have nothing else to give. The justice campaign is run on a shoestring and the free Sambhavna Clinic in Bhopal is entirely dependent on individual donations. Donations to either or both of these causes are gratefully welcomed. All you have to do is tell people what has happened in Bhopal, how thousands of people have been abandoned to their suffering, without adequate medical, financial or social help – the callousness of the corporation which refuses to clean its contaminated factory or to turn up in court where it is charged with criminal offences – people want to help. Inform yourself by browsing this website, using the links and search facility. There is a wealth of information and resources available at our student website, www.studentsforbhopal.org. For people who may want to organise a large meeting, a travelling photographic exhibition by award-winning cameraman Raghu Rai is available for the cost of transporting it. For more detailed medical information, check www.bhopal.org, the website of the Bhopal Medical Appeal and the Sambhavna Clinic. A number of short videos and audio programmes can be found on www.bhopal.fm, where you can also watch the full length feature film Bhopal Express free of charge.
An oustanding source of ideas and resources for planning and carrying out actions such as vigils, demonstrations, street plays, petitions, is our student website, www.studentsforbhopal.org. This is one of the finest activist sites on the web, and can guide you through every moment from sitting down to plan an action, to linking with the media and follow-up work afterwards. If you are a student, please think about starting a Bhopal support group at your school or university. |
