40 Years of Confronting Corporate Crime

Why would we want to tell the full story of Bhopal? Because we have never been able to tell the full story. Because the media has never and will never tell the full story. Because we believe that once you know the full story, it will make you see your familiar world in a different way – raw and minus the veneer of polite society. The real world where corporate crime is ubiquitous and granted impunity by default. Quite possibly it will make you see us, the Bhopal survivors, in a different way too. Not as “other” to be pitied or ignored but as fellow victims of corporate crime, fellow warriors in the battle for people over profits.

This poster exhibition is one way we thought of telling the full story. So that we do not overwhelm you with information yet not leave out the essential details. Please give us your feedback and hopefully volunteer to improve the telling of our story. Our common story.

1. Facts and Figures

A Corporate Crime against half a million people was exposed through the spectacular event of December 2-3, 1984. Yet till today there are no credible information on the destruction of lives and health or to the soil and groundwater caused by the Union Carbide Corporation, USA in Bhopal

2. How Did the Disaster Occur?

The 1796, Grose’s Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, defines “Taradiddling” as “a fib, or falsity” – perhaps from “diddle” meaning to cheat. Corporations have been taradiddling at least a couple hundred years before that term was invented. One of Union Carbide’s big taradiddle was that the disaster “was caused by the deliberate introduction of water in to the MIC tank by a disgruntled worker”. The following posters will adequately equip you with the technical wherewithal to expose the vulgar tongue that blames the victims for its crime. In support of the workers of the Bhopal factory and indeed workers of the world, do spread this exposé.

3. Lessons of Bhopal

Governments and corporations across the planet may not have learnt anything from the 1984 Bhopal Gas Disaster, nor from the ongoing disaster today. But the resolute survivors of the disaster, and the many communities of survivors of similar crimes around the world, with whom we offer solidarity and support, definitely have.
