Bhopal Survivors’ Organisations Present Chargesheet Against BJP

At a press conference held on the occasion of the 41st Anniversary of the Union Carbide gas disaster in Bhopal, four organizations of the survivors charged the BJP as a political party chiefly responsible for the continued injustice and suffering in Bhopal even after four decades. Presenting a “Bhopal Survivors’ Chargesheet against the BJP” they said that the BJP calls itself a patriotic party but has always been ready to serve the interest of the US corporations over that of Indian citizens.

Said Rashida Bee, President of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh and a survivor with chronic illnesses, “The BJP at the state government and at the centre has betrayed the Bhopal survivors like no other political party. A prominent member of BJP is known to have protected Union Carbide’s local management from charges of poisoning water around the factory and another prominent member wrote a legal opinion absolving Dow Chemical of its environmental liabilities in Bhopal which was contrary to the Indian government’s official opinion.”

“It was Shri Advani of BJP who as Home Minister in 2002, directed the prosecuting agency CBI to seek dilution of criminal charges against Warren Anderson and Union Carbide Corporation in the criminal case on the disaster.” said Balkrishna Namdeo, President of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pensionbhogee Sangharsh Morcha. “Credit must go to the judge in the Bhopal district court who rejected CBI’s application and prevented this injustice against the Bhopal victims.”

Speaking on the neglect of Bhopal survivors by the ruling party, Rachna Dhingra of the Bhopal Group for Information & Action said, “Medical and economic rehabilitation of Bhopal survivors have been worst under BJP rule. In 2008, under Congress rule at the centre, we were granted our demand for setting up of an Empowered Commission on Bhopal for long term rehabilitation but it was the BJP Chief Minister, Chouhan who stopped it. Today the survivors are suffering in the absence of such a Commission.”

Nawab Khan, President of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha said, “Dow Chemical, the US corporation that is sheltering absconding Killer Carbide, is having its best time under BJP rule. Despite being legally forbidden, public-sector undertakings are brazenly purchasing Union Carbide’s products from Dow Chemical and the corporation is expanding its business in India like never before.”
