On the 41st anniversary of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, survivors’ organisations condemned the BJP government for protecting and advancing Dow Chemical’s profits in India. From treating India as a dumping yard for its chemical waste to investing huge amounts in toxic products, Dow Chemicals has flourished in this country.
On the back of these strong statements, and to commemorate the anniversary of the world’s worst industrial disaster, hundreds of survivors and supporters gathered on 3rd December with an effigy of Dow Chemicals and BJP, to march through the old city. This commemorative rally has been a tradition for 41 years and is largely comprised of women survivors.
Shortly after the rally began, local police stopped the survivors – even after agreeing in writing that the rally was “permissible” – and allowed hooligans of the local BJP and RSS units to confront them, abruptly and forcefully remove the effigy, and to threaten everyone with physical violence. In the confrontation, the survivors were labelled as “anti-nationals”.
