VK Jain arrested by SPE sleuths

BHOPAL FEBRUARY 22: The Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) Chairman VK Jain was arrested by the Special Police Establishment (SPE) of the Lokayukta for amassing huge wealth disproportionate to his known source of income. The SPE sleuths who raided the residence and other houses owned by VK Jain and his relatives are reported to have recovered property worth more then Rs 15 crore. The police on Thursday opened several bank lockers from where precious stones, jewellery worth several crores of rupees were recovered.

The raids were simultaneously carried out at his 74 Bungalow residence and other places at Bhopal, Indore, Neemuch, Gondia, Jabalpur, Mandsaur, Katni and Manasa on Tuesday morning. He is expected to be produced before the special magistrate on Friday. Officials recovered property papers of a house at gautam Nagar worth Rs 2 crore and another multi-storeyed building at Indore worth more than Rs 10 crore.

The two bank lockers at Bhopal were opened by the officials and precious stones, gold and ornaments worth more than Rs 30 lakh were recovered apart from important papers related to property and investment bonds worth more then 2 crore.

Papers related to four other bank lockers in the State Bank of Indore and Canara Bank and two other lockers at Indore have also been recovered.

The officials opened the State Bank of Indore and Canara bank lockers on Thursday morning in the presence of his wife, daughter and daughter-in-law.

Up-Lokayukta, KK Lohani of Indore was present when the lockers were opened. according to sources, more than Rs 3 crore worth of riches and property papers were recovered from the lockers while two lockers could not be opened till late in the afternoon on Thursday.

It may also be mentioned that officials also discovered incriminating documents related to irregularities committed by the chairman and some prominent industrialists of Mahya Pradesh.

Apart from the SPE sleuths, departments including Income Tax, police, intelligence and other government agencies have also swung into action against Jain and his accomplice Agarwal.

MPPCB offices in different parts of the state including Gwalior, Indore have also been sealed. Officials from different departments are scrutinising papers in these offices.

According to sources, the officials have detected grave  irregularities during the tenure of Jain and seized all such documents.

They informed that irregularities committed in the office have been deliberate and special favours granted to many industrialists and employees. A large number of employees and officers have been given out-of-turn promotions and illegal appointments have been made.

Jain has taken many decisions against the accepted norms and rules of the government.

He is likely to face charges of irregularities and misuse of official position leading to accumulation of huge wealth through illegal means.

Sources informed that wealth worth more then Rs 20 crore has already been recovered from Jain and officials are expecting to unearth more property during further investigations.
