An Invitation To President Bill Clinton to visit Bhopal
From The Survivors of the Union Carbide Disaster
March 6, 2000
Dear Mr. President,
On behalf of hundreds of thousands survivors of the December '84 Bhopal Gas Disaster we urge you to visit our city as part of your upcoming trip to India. As you must remember this worst industrial disaster in world history occurred in a hazardously located pesticide factory owned by Union Carbide Corporation a US based transnational. It may concern you to discover that the disaster continues till today.
Investigations by internationally renowned scientists and government agencies show that the disaster was a direct consequence of cost cutting measures initiated by the corporation's US headquarters. Substantial evidence points to senior officials of the corporation being privy to the ever growing hazards in the factory and yet having reckless disregard for the lives and health of the people of our city. Serious charges of manslaughter and grievous assault lie pending against the Corporation and its Chairman at that time; Mr. Warren Anderson. The Corporation fraudulently maintains that its criminal liabilities are extinguished as a result of the settlement in the civil case. As the article "A Key Figure Proves Elusive In A U S Suit Over Bhopal" - NYT Sunday 5 March 2000, describes, Mr. Anderson is a fugitive from the Bhopal District court having jumped bail in 1984. The U S Department of Justice and the Interpol have been unable to help the Indian courts. Now we find that Mr. Anderson can not be brought before the Federal Court in Manhattan.
Whilst the prime accused continue to abscond, over 16,000 of our people have died as a result of the disaster. The death toll continues to rise till today. Over 120,000 of our people are in desperate need of special medical attention. Thousands of our families where the breadwinners are too sick to work are on the brink of starvation. Scientists from your country have found high concentrations of cancer inducing chemicals in the ground water around the factory. We are faced with an alarming rise in cancers and tuberculosis in our communities. More and more of our young daughters have serious problems in menstruation. Union Carbide's ongoing denial of medical information makes us apprehensive of what the future may bring for us and for our children.
As people whose memories are forever etched with the suffering caused by the poison cloud, it is our fondest wish that such a tragedy does not befall any other people. You will agree with us, Mr. President, that in the real world of business, exemplary punishment to Union Carbide and its officials is the only way to make the world safe from such man made catastrophes.
Mr. President, we would like you as a global defender of human rights to visit our city and witness the gross violation of our right to a healthy life by a corporation of your country. We hope you will be affected not only by our misery but also by our resolve to secure justice. We hope you will then help us persuade Union Carbide Corporation and Mr. Warren Anderson to present themselves before the courts in India or the USA.
We extend a warm welcome to you in Bhopal.
Still waiting after 15 years,
for the Campaign for Justice in Bhopal
