Day 14: Bhopal Hunger Strike
July 12, 2002
Most of the Bhopal survivors have returned to Bhopal to mobilize their
friends for the 16 July rally in New Delhi. The hunger strikers were joined
by supporters from New Delhi these last two days. As the hunger strike
advances in days, Rasheeda, Tara and Sathyu are experiencing common
symptoms. All three are beginning to suffer from cramps and weakness, and as
Sathyu puts it, "we have been spending more time horizontally than
vertically." The three, though, are in good spirits and as resolved as when
they began.
The heat still hasn't let up, although the Government shows feeble signs of
response. Thanks to Dominique Lapierre's persistent phone calls to former
Home Minister and currently Dy Prime Minister L.K. Advani at odd hours in
the day to impress the criminality behind the Government decisions, and of
course the overall visibility of the problem, Advani is likely to meet the
hunger strikers on July 13th. The meeting with Advani will, if anything,
deal only with one of the decisions - of CBI's application to the court to
dilute charges on Warren Anderson from homicide to negligence.
The decision to misappropriate the survivors' money still needs to be
addressed, and that is an issue that we will emphasise also through
parliament discussions and through meetings that have to be arranged between
now and 17th.
