Four organizations of survivors of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, today announced the setting up of “Yaad-E-Haadsaa — a survivors’ memorial to the worst industrial disaster in history. Two charitable trusts working for the welfare of the survivors — Sambhavna Trust and the newly formed Chingari Trust also joined them in this venture.
The organizations have started collecting photographs and memorabilia from families of victims, pamphlets and posters from survivors organizations, corporate and government documents and other visual material related to the setting up and running of the pesticide plant, the disaster on 2-3 December, 1984 and its long aftermath. The memorial will presently be housed at the old clinic building of Sambhavna Trust in Sant Kanwar Ram Nagar near the Union Carbide factory.
Chingari Trust has recently been set up by Mrs. Rashida Bee and Mrs. Champa Devi Shukla with 1, 25, 000 US dollars they received along with the Goldman Environmental Prize last year. In addition to participating in the creation of Yaad E Haadsaa, Chingari will run employment generation programs for women survivors, provide financial support for treatment of congenital problems among children born to disaster victims and award fellowships to women activists fighting hazardous corporations.
The six organizations have jointly appealed to all survivors and their sympathizers to donate money and material towards building the memorial to the disaster.
