डाव केमिकल कम्पनी को बचाने के विरोध में हादसे के पीड़ितों ने अमरीकी राष्ट्रपति ओबामा का पुतला जलाया

अमरीकी सरकार द्वारा यूनियन कार्बाइड गैस हादसे पर भोपाल जिला अदालत में जारी आपराधिक प्रकरण से डाव केमिकल कम्पनी को बचाने के विरोध में आज हादसे के पीड़ितों ने अमरीकी राष्ट्रपति ओबामा का पुतला जलाया। अमरीकी राष्ट्रपति के दफ्तर के वेबसाइट पर 1 लाख से अधिक हस्ताक्षरकर्ताओं द्वारा जिला अदालत से डाव केमिकल के ख़िलाफ़ जारी नोटिस की अमरीकी न्याय विभाग द्वारा तामीली की माँग के जवाब में दिए गए बयान पर गैस पीड़ितों के संगठनों के नेताओं ने आक्रोश जताया।

भोपाल के समर्थक भारत में अमरीकी दूतावासों के बाहर प्रदर्शन कर यह माँग करेंगे कि अमरीकी सरकार डाव केमिकल को सरंक्षण देना बंद करे| समर्थक @POTUS और @PMO पर ट्वीट कर 19 अगस्त की पेशी पर डाव केमिकल को हाज़िर करवाने का सन्देश भी भेजेंगे |

अमरीकी राष्ट्रपति के दफ्तर से जारी बयान के अनुसार कि अगर वह अमरीकी न्याय विभाग को डाव केमिकल पर नोटिस तामिल करवाने के लिए कहती है तो यह “अनुचित दबाव” डालना  होगा| ये तो सरासर फ़रेब है |  न्याय विभाग को भारत और अमरीका के बीच की संधि की शर्तों का पालन करने को कहना अनुचित कैसे हो सकता है ?”, कहते हैं भोपाल गैस पीड़ित निराश्रित पेंशनभोगी संघर्ष मोर्चा के बालकृष्ण नामदेव।

भोपाल गैस पीड़ित महिला पुरुष संघर्ष मोर्चा के नवाब ख़ाँ कहते हैं “अमरीकी सरकार द्वारा भारत के साथ संधि की शर्तों का उल्लंघन अनुचित दवाब के बहाने से करना वाकई दिलचस्प है क्योंकि भोपाल में अमरीकी सरकार आज तक यही करती आई है। इस बात के दस्तावेज़ी सबूत है कि अमरीकी सरकार ने भोपाल में यूनियन कार्बाइड के कारख़ाने को लगाने में और भोपाल अदालत में जारी कानूनी कार्यवाही से कंपनी के अध्यक्ष वॉरेन एण्डरसन को बचाने में अनुचित दवाब का इस्तेमाल किया है।”

“अमरीकी  न्याय विभाग द्वारा भोपाल अदालत से जारी 4 नोटिसों पर अमरीका और भारत के बीच 25 साल पुरानी पारस्परिक कानूनी सहायता संधि के लगातार उल्लंघन पर भारत सरकार और ख़ासकर केंद्रीय गृह मंत्रालय की चुप्पी पर हम हैरान हैं। , कहती हैं भोपाल ग्रुप फॉर इन्फॉर्मेशन एण्ड एक्शन की रचना ढींगरा। उन्होंने  बताया कि संगठनों ने प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय और गृह मंत्रालय को चिट्ठी लिख कर यह माँग की है कि भारत सरकार पारस्परिक कानूनी सहायता संधि के तहत अमरीकी सरकार के किसी भी अनुरोध का सम्मान न करे जब तक भोपाल जिला अदालत द्वारा जारी नोटिस अमरीकी न्याय विभाग डाव केमिकल को तामील नहीं कराती है।

डाव – कार्बाइड के खिलाफ बच्चों की साफ़रीन ख़ान कहती हैं, “राष्ट्रपति ओबामा ने मैक्सिको की खाड़ी में तेल रिसाव हादसे के लिए एक ब्रिटिश कम्पनी के चूतड़ पर लात मारने की कसम खाई थी पर जब यही बात अमरीकी कंपनी के लिए आती है तो उसे वह चूमते नजर आते हैं।”

Bhopal Gas Tragedy Survivors Burn Barack Obama’s Effigy for Continuing to Shield Dow Chemical

Survivors of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal today burned effigy of US President, Barrack Obama for continuing to shield Dow Chemical Company from the ongoing criminal proceedings on the disaster in the Bhopal District Court. Leaders of survivors’ organizations expressed outrage at the White House’s recent response to a petition signed by well over 125,000 signatories calling for the US Department of Justice to serve the Bhopal court’s notice on Dow Chemical.

Supporters of the Bhopal survivors will be holding actions outside American consulates in India demanding that the US government stop protecting Dow Chemical. Supporters will also send out tweets @POTUS and @PMOindia asking them to make Dow Chemical appear in its hearing on 19th August in the Bhopal Court.

“The White House has said that asking the US Department of Justice to serve notice on Dow Chemical would be exercising “undue influence”. This is extreme duplicity. How can asking the Department to follow the terms of the treaty between India and US be improper?” said Balkrishna Namdeo, president of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pensionbhogi Sangharsh Morcha.

Nawab Khan of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha said “The US government’s refusal to follow its treaty with India under the pretext of not using undue influence is heavy with irony. There is documentary evidence of the US government using undue influence to help Union Carbide set up the killer factory in Bhopal and to protect its chairman Warren Anderson from criminal proceedings in the Bhopal court.”

“We are shocked that the Indian government and particularly the Indian home ministry that sent the Bhopal court’s notice to the US Department of Justice has chosen to remain quiet about the repeated violation of the 25 year old Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) between India and US” said  Rachna Dhingra of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action.

She said that the organizations have sent letters to the PMO and the Home Minister demanding that the Indian government refuse to honour requests from the US Department of Justice under MLAT till it serves the Bhopal District Court’s notice on Dow Chemical.

Safreen Khan of Children Against Dow-Carbide said “President Obama vowed to kick the ass of a British corporation for the oil spill disaster in Gulf of Mexico but when it comes to an American corporation he seems to be kissing instead of kicking”.

Greed, carelessness, and a callous disregard for human life – these words sum up the causes of the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster. Dow Chemical, an American corporation, and its subsidiary the Union Carbide Corporation are legally responsible for the 1984 Bhopal disaster. But Dow-Carbide has refused to show up to court and face criminal charges that have been pending in India for 25+ years. Dow-Carbide has gotten away with this because the US government keeps acting as Dow’s special protector, guarding it from all accusations and accountability.

Right now the White House and the US Department of Justice are shielding Dow-Carbide from FOUR court notices sent by the Indian Judicial system, which per international treaty must be served to Dow. Press Statement: Bhopal Gas Victims condemn repeated non-appearance of the Dow Chemical Company, USA in the Bhopal District Court

At a press conference today, five organisations fighting for the rights of the survivors of the December ‘84 Bhopal gas disaster expressed anger at the repeated non-appearance of The Dow Chemical Company, USA, current owner of Union Carbide, in response to the notice sent by the Bhopal District court.

The organizations blamed the Indian government’s weak- kneed attempts and the US government’s continued support to the offending corporations for the non-appearance of The Dow Chemical Company (TDCC), USA for the second time yesterday. The organisations have sent letters to the Indian Prime Minister and the American President seeking effective action on this matter.
