At a press conference today organizations of survivors of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal presented their response to the decision of the Supreme Court that was made available online on March 15, 2023. Earlier, the organizations had condemned the decision on the day the Curative Petition for additional compensation for the disaster was dismissed by the Bench on March 14.
Five organizations of the December 1984 Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal today jointly condemned the Supreme Court’s dismissal of the Curative Petition. Likening today’s decision with the apex court’s February 1989 decision on the settlement of the case, the organizations called it a “judicial assault on the constitutional and legal rights of the Bhopal survivors”. The organizations resolved to
continue their struggle for justice in Bhopal till all survivors are adequately compensated.
भोपाल में यूनियन कार्बाइड हादसे के पीड़ितों के पाँच संगठनों ने आज एक पत्रकार वार्ता में दिसम्बर 1984 के गैस हादसे में हुई मौतों और चोटों के आँकड़ों पर राज्य और केंद्र सरकारों की चुप्पी की निंदा की। उन्होंने घोषणा की कि यदि उन्हें 26 दिसम्बर तक सुधार याचिका में आँकड़ों के सुधार की जानकारी नहीं मिली , तो वे सरकारों से अपना वादा पूरा करवाने के लिए शान्तिपूर्ण जन आन्दोलन शुरू करेंगे। ज्ञातव्य है कि भोपाल गैस हादसे के लिए अमरीकी कम्पनी यूनियन कार्बाइड और उसके मालिक डाव केमिकल से अतिरिक्त मुआवज़े की माँग करते हुए 2010 में केन्द्र सरकार द्वारा दायर सुधार याचिका की जल्द ही 10 जनवरी को सुनवाई होगी |
At a Press Conference today, five organizations of survivors of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal condemned the ongoing silence of the state and central governments over the figures of death and extent of injuries caused by the December 1984 disaster. They announced that if they do not get information on the revision of figures in the Curative Petition by 26th December, they will launch peaceful mass action to make the governments fulfill their promise. The Curative Petition for additional compensation from Union Carbide and its owner Dow Chemical for the Bhopal gas disaster is scheduled to be heard on January 10.
Leaders of five organizations of survivors of the Union Carbide gas disaster in Bhopal expressed satisfaction at the Indian government’s commitment to pursue the Curative Petition for additional compensation in the Supreme Court at today’s hearing. They expressed hope that while the Court has limited the participation of organizations in the Curative Petition, the government will pay due regard to the claims of the Bhopal victims for enhanced compensation, as they are required to do by statute, as per extent of injuries suffered and deaths caused by the disaster.
