For over three decades, some of the poorest people on earth have fought a tireless struggle for their basic rights to justice, health and a life of dignity against one of the word’s richest multinational corporations. On April 25th, we have a major opportunity to show them that they are not alone in this longest fight for environmental justice.

Having failed, despite repeated requests, to present their grievances before the Prime Minister for the last three years and the Chief Minister for the last six years, survivors of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal have today launched a novel way to draw much needed attention to their five most urgent issues of rehabilitation, justice and adequate compensation.
The campaign called “paanch guhaar” took off with children with congenital malformations born to gas affected parents pleading for attention from the highest officials before large portraits of the current Prime Minister and the Chief Minister.
Moving images of the children’s pleadings for medical care, social and economic rehabilitation, adequate compensation, punishment of the culprits and clean up of lingering poisons in soil and groundwater were then sent through twitter to the two leaders by a team of cyber activists of the younger generation of the survivors. The portraits of the two officials will be carried to different areas of the city affected by the December 1984 gas disaster and those where the groundwater is poisoned with hazardous waste from the Union Carbide factory that caused the disaster. The “paanch guhaar” campaign will continue till the 33 rd anniversary of the disaster on December 3, 2017.

Leaders of five organisations of survivors of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal today announced the successful completion of the petition to the US Whitehouse in the matter of the criminal case on the disaster. The leaders are hopeful that in the process of responding to the petition the US Department of Justice will serve the Bhopal District Court’s notice on Union Carbide’s owner Dow Chemical so that it appears in the criminal case on July 13. The organisations said that they have sent a letter to the Prime Minister seeking directions to the prosecution, Central Bureau of Investigation to call for harsher measures against Dow Chemical if it fails to appear on July 13.
