34 Years After the Union Carbide Disaster: Contamination Spreading, Miserable Condition of Healthcare, Corruption in Rehabilitation Funds & Guilty Corporations Protected by our Governments

Press Conference

December 2, 2018

Addressing a Press Conference on the occasion of the 34th Anniversary of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, leaders of four survivors’ organisations said that the Indian government is protecting the criminal corporations with more zeal and being more indifferent towards the victims, ever since Mr. Modi became the Prime Minister.

The organisations said that Mr. Modi’s special relationship with Dow Chemical, Union Carbide’s owner, is known since he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat where Dow tried to set up a joint venture with Gujarat Chemicals and Alkalis in 2008. As the Prime Minister, Modi is known to have invited Dow Chemical’s CEO to a special dinner and photo-op during one of his visits to US in 2015.

Press Statement: Survivors Present their Greviences to PM Modi and CM Chauhan

21 November 2017

Having failed, despite repeated requests, to present their grievances before the Prime Minister for the last three years and the Chief Minister for the last six years, survivors of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal have today launched a novel way to draw much needed attention to their five most urgent issues of rehabilitation, justice and adequate compensation.

The campaign called “paanch guhaar” took off with children with congenital malformations born to gas affected parents pleading for attention from the  highest officials before large portraits of the current Prime Minister and the  Chief Minister.

Moving images of the children’s pleadings for medical care, social and economic rehabilitation, adequate compensation, punishment of the culprits and clean up of lingering poisons in soil and groundwater were then sent through twitter to the two leaders by a team of cyber activists of the younger generation of the survivors. The portraits of the two officials will be carried to different areas of the city affected by the December 1984 gas disaster and those where the groundwater is poisoned with hazardous waste from the Union Carbide factory that caused the disaster. The “paanch guhaar” campaign will continue till the 33 rd anniversary of the disaster on  December 3, 2017.
