Wednesday, November 16, 2005 (Bhopal):
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Babulal Gaur is facing criticism for accepting state compensation given to victims of the gas leak in Bhopal.
Gaur lived in the area during the accident in 1984, which affected several hundred people.
In December 2004 four months after he became Chief Minister, Gaur received Rs 25,000 in compensation like any other victim.
Congress criticism
The Congress party criticised Gaur for taking the money.
Congress spokesman in Madhya Pradesh Manak Agarwal said, Gaur sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for the development of his ancestral village in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh.
He added, “[when] he can give Rs. 50 lakh there but here he is taking Rs. 25,000 of the gas victims [money].
“He should immediately return the money, ” Agarwal demanded.
But Gaur says he will donate the money to the poor.
Had Gaur declared last year itself that he would distribute his share of the compensation to the poor, he would have earned accolades.
