DEATH OF REHAB: A man committed suicide as the govt was not giving his family, displaced due to the Sardar Sarovar dam, any compensation.
Khandva (Bhopal): The issue of rehabilitation of oustees of the Sardar Sarovar Dam continues to be a contentious one. The government claims those displaced by Dam have been settled for good.
However, the story of a 22-year-old man contradicts all that the government is saying.
Santosh was one of the 20,000 people shifted to Chanera village about two years ago when Harsood village was declared dangerous to live in.
The construction of the Indira Sagar dam on the Narmada river had just been completed and the villagers say they have not received the compensation they were promised.
On Sunday, Santosh jumped in front of moving train and killed himself. In a note left behind, he blames the government and says that he was taking the extreme step to expose the Centre’s lies.
His wife, Jaishree Palival, is in a state of shock and all she can say is that had the government given the compensation my husband wouldn’t have taken the extreme step.
However, former minister Kailash Vijaywargia, denies Santosh’s claims.
“Rs two lakh have already been released to the account of the wife of the dead and the suicide has definitely been committed for some personal reason,” says he.
While the government maintains a stony silence on the whole issue of rehabilition, the police are investigating the suicide to see if it is indeed what it seems.
