THERE’S NO stopping Medha Patkar. On Wednesday, the Narmada Bachao Andolan leader said she would expose state governments who “lied” about the status of rehabilitation of the dam-affected people.
During a stopover in Bhopal on her way to Badwani, Patkar staged a dharna in front of the Chief Minister’s residence. She said she was “disgusted” with political parties and said she would seek the support of like-minded peoples’ organisations, cultural activists, artistes and writers to carry out her campaign.
She said that after the state government filed their replies in the Supreme Court, the NBA would present a true picture of the shoddy rehabilitation work carried out in
the Narmada Valley. Patkar also said that the Supreme Court had not yet given a full verdict on stopping further construction on the Sardar Sarovar dam and the Prime Minister could still intervene in the matter.
She reiterated that of the 90 rehabilitation sites — the state government claims to have completed work on 48 – not one is worth living.
The NBA leader also denied that the report of the Central team, led by Union Water Resource Minister Saifuddin Soz, was ‘biased’ or influenced by the NBA. She dared anyone to state or write that the NBA received funds from abroad.
