RAIPUR. A police officer in Chhattisgarh has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting an American aid worker on board a train, a senior railway official said on Wednesday.
Umendra Mishra, a crime branch assistant sub-inspector, was taken into custody after the 26-year-old woman complained to railway police that she had been repeatedly kissed against her will by a man in uniform near Bilaspur, 110 km northeast of the state capital, Raipur.
“Accused Mishra had been arrested Tuesday under section 354 of IPC (Indian Penal Code) and was produced before a railway magistrate who granted him conditional bail,” Pawan Deo, deputy inspector-general of the state’s railway police, told Reuters.
Officials said the alleged incident took place on the Mumbai-bound Geetanjali Express on Monday night as Mishra travelled in the same compartment as the woman, who works for a charity based in Bhopal.
