Users of this website clicking the link to Bhopal-Justice.com, an excellent law resource website set up by the Campaign for Justice in Bhopal, a predecessor of the ICJB, may have been surprised to find themselves staring at the intimate parts of ladies called Sweetcat, Aaahhh, Sexybabe, 69_bi_teen_4u and Isabela who gives her gender, quite unnecessarily, as “female”.
An internet domain can be hijacked if its owners are slow in renewing its registration.
Bhopal-Justice.com was snatched in April this year by one “Alain Roe”, purportedly from Sarasota, Florida, whose name crops up again and again in connection with such scams. Mr Roe is reported by the Chandigarh Tribune, to have hijacked a website belonging to the Khalsa Environmental Trust. “The Trust,” complained the Tribune, “undertook environmental work and received positive media attention in India and abroad. It comprises eminent persons who are prominent Sikhs in Delhi and abroad.” These bemused worthies accessed what used to be their religious website to be met with the greeting “Hi I’m Laura, I’m F/19/Bombay. What follows is a list of my favourite adult links.”
Earlier this year Roe seized the domain name yarratrams.com, which belongs to Yarra Trams of Melbourne, a public transport company. True to form users of the site were directed to a pornographic website which screamed “WELCOME TO THE WEB’S HOTTEST LIVE CAMS!” and exhorted them to “Enjoy Watching 1000’s of Hot Young Exhibitionists Get Wild And Nasty For Free!”
The company complained to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) on 4 April and the following day received an email from Mr Roe which stated “If you’re interested in the yarratrams.com domain name, we would certainly be prepared to sell it, and would be willing to accept US$ 100 for it. Resolution through WIPO is unnecessary.”
Mr Roe’s hijacked domains direct users to a pornographic website mtreexxx.net owned by Accretive-Networks (aka Flyingcroc.com). This in turn advertises ten further destinations, claiming: “The 10 sites below are not run by a couple of scumbags . . . these are multi-million dollar operations. Actually the sites below are public companies . . . hell you can invest in them on the New York stock exchange.”
Mtreexxx.net is part of a spammer community that operates out of spurious email accounts and domains with names like mankilledthedodo.com, dadunkadunkdunk.com and the rather wonderful zoomzoomgoestheboom.com.
The website is also implicated with the computer virus JS.Fortnight.B, which arrives in mass emailings and corrupts Internet Explorer settings so that any website address entered into the browser is automatically redirected to a list of more than 100 spam addresses. All of this of course takes a lot of money.
But as we in the Bhopal campaign well know, being a multi-million dollar operation doesn’t stop you being a scumbag.
