Supreme Court okays construction on Narmada dam

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday gave the green light to continue construction of the Sardar Sarovar dam on river Narmada, but urged the prime minister to ensure people displaced are adequately compensated.
Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal dismissed an appeal by groups opposed to the project to raise the height of the dam and hoped activists opposed to it will now co-operate.
In another important judgement, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan’s petition challenging her disqualification from the Rajya Sabha for holding an office of profit.
